Best Red Douro during the 2010 Port Harvest Tour

Post by Roy Hersh »

Off the top of my head, the 2000 Quinta do Portal Gran Reserve is the winner, but then again, I am going to have to check closely as I know we had some winners at Alves de Sousa, Quinta do Vallado and also at DOC with Manuel Angelo Barros.

What was your favorite?
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

Yes, that Portal was a smoking good Douro...but my favorite was between the 2007 Abandonado Douro (Alves de Sousa) and the 2007 Quinta do Crasto Maria Teresa and the 2008 Quinta do Vallado Sousao Douro. All of them rocked and it's hard to say which one was better. Only time will tell.

My favorite was the 2007 Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa.
In second place were multiple wines - 2008 Quinta do Vallado Reserva, 2007 Alves de Sousa Abandonado, and 2000 Quinta do Portal Grande Reserva

Hi!
Difficult to choose, as there were many good red wines. Many tastings were based on corked being pulled, and then served immediately, and quite a few of the wines would have benefitted from abt one hour in the decanter.
At Quinta do Crasto all red wines were served from a decanter, which made them even better. I liked especially the following at Quinta do Crasto : Maria Teresa 2007, Reserva 1994 and Roquette & Caves 2006.
From Alves de Sousa I liked especially Quinta de Gaivosa 2005, at Quevedo the not-released Claudia's 2008 which will be very interesting to follow as it matures, then there were two red wines at Quinta do Portal: Grande Reserva 2000 (of which I also purchased two bottles) and Tinto Roriz 1997, and finally at Quinta do Vallado 2003 Sousao that had been decanted for abt one hour.

Then the big surprise for me. Father and son Barros joined us for lunch at the DOC restaurant in Douro, and they presented three red wines under their new Dona Matilde-set up. I actually gave the basic Dona Matilde Tinto 2008 92 points, and ended up purchasing both that wine and the two Dona Matilde Reservas from 2007 and 2008. Especilally in view of the beneficial retail price, the Tinto 2008 was fantastic not only on it's own, but also as value-for-money. Tasted one bottle last weekend for dinner at home, and can inform that the impression of the wine was unchanged. I will post a proper tasting note on that wine.

I am the same page with you for best wines. I would also like to add Alves de Sousa's white port to the list. They are taking white port to another level!
