1977 Porto Rocha Colheita Port

Post by Glenn E. »

Purchased by the glass at Daniel's Broiler in Bellevue on 18-DEC-2010. According to the wine list it came from a 375ml bottle. I drank it during dinner with my steak and it was beautiful as always.

1977 Porto Rocha Colheita

Color: Hard to tell due to very low restaurant lighting, but appeared to be a medium tawny. Very little red was visible in the light, but it was also clearly not a dark tawny or dark brown.
Nose: Butterscotch, caramel, some faint dried apricots, and a very tiny bit of VA. Possibly also some very faint orange rind or other citrus rind.
Palate: Very smooth, but lively. Strong citrus tang that complemented the steak. Good acidity that cut through the fat as well. Some butterscotch, but more toffee and some tangy apricots. Almost perfect level of sweetness - enough to hold its own, but not so much that the food made it sour.
Finish: Difficult to evaluate with food, but seemed plenty long. Flavors echoed the palate.

Score: 94 points. I've had better examples, but this was still an outstanding Port. It's possible that this bottle had been open for a few days under less than ideal storage conditions, though I would expect Daniel's Broiler to have a wine preservation system in use. (It's a high-end steakhouse.)
