1999 Quinta da Gaivosa LBV Port

Post by Glenn E. »

From a batch of LBVs that I tasted over a couple of days in late 2010.

1999 Quinta da Gaivosa LBV
unfiltered, bottled 2004

Color: Very dark red/burgundy, nearly opaque in the center.
Nose: Lightly spicy, grape gummies, and a dark pineapple or pear-like note.
Palate: Also light and fruity, with good tannins and acidity. Smooth. Very different in a "happy" and buoyant way.
Finish: Smooth and light, but still rich. Moderate warmth.

Score: 93 points. Superb. Almost tropical in nature.

Thanks for the tasting note Glenn!

I tried a bottle last fall and was positively surprised.
Posted a tasting note that time at 90, and I have seen Roy with one at 91 some time ago, so it indicates a steady quality of the 1999 Gaivosa LBV

Glenn:

Are you finding this locally on the shelf? QdG make great products all around. I am yet to see any of their offerings for sale in Boston. Hopefully I that will change soon! [beg.gif]

I'd never heard of Gaivosa before reading this TN. I did a quick search online and the only products I can find for sale in the US are their table wines - no port. Based on your note I'd be happy to try an LBV if I could find it.

Their tables wines are top notch too. We visited there on the Harvest tour and everyone was quite impressed. Some of their products were among the best of the whole Tour.

It has been pure luck every time I've found a QdG product here in the states. My best haul was when my local QFC grocery store was having a clearance sale and I managed to pick up 3 x 2003 QdG VP in 375 ml bottles. But even the wine steward at the time didn't know where it had come from (the wine stewards seem to change frequently, so it had probably been ordered by someone before her).

I wish I could say that I have a regular source for their products, but sadly I don't. I've just lucked into them every time I've seen them. [beg.gif]

Lamont,

If you'd been a subscriber, I'd send you a bottle from my stash. [shrug.gif]

The one place I see on the East Coast that has this wants $40 a bottle.

Kind of a lot for LBV in IMO.

Glad not everybody posts their prices on line.

That is a crazy price though. [dash1.gif]
