2005 Taylor Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

Post by Eric Menchen »

From a half bottle, first decanted off of some sediment about three hours ...

Definite dark color, but I didn't study it. A little hot when swirled. Nice fruit, black currant. I later noticed a spice aroma I couldn't totally place--it seemed to be a cross between eucalyptus and fenugreek--and there was a touch of cinnamon. Mild tannins and medium to mild acid. An easy drinker with a nice finish. Remainder poured into a half bottle, vacuumed, and refrigerated.

Skipped the next night, tasted after two days after pouring and allowing it to come up to a cellar temperature. Now the flavor is much more fruity, with cherry, grape, and berry. The heat has subsided some making for more pleasant aromatics. The tannins and acid are similar to before, but overall things are much better integrated.

93 points.
