Three of Portugal's best-known winemakers, all associated with properties in the Douro, are forming a joint venture in Dão, the higher-altitude region just south of the Douro Valley. Francisco "Xito" Olazabal, winemaker at Quinta do Vale Meão and Quinta do Vallado, Jorge Serôdio Borges of Pintas and Quinta do Passadouro and Jorge Moreira of Poeira, Quinta de La Rosa and Real Companhia Velha have just announced a joint venture to lease Quinta do Corujão and its 24 acres of vineyards in Dão.

A great trio of guys and brilliant winemakers. I had both Jorges at our home for a dinner back in 2003, the wines at which ... neither of them will ever forget. They were both pretty green back then and I had no idea that they would someday become two of the most talented and influential winemakers in the Douro region. It is somewhat intriguing to see how many well-known winemakers of DOC Douro are now branching out and experimenting with different grape types in the Dao, Tejo, Lisbon and other regions of Portugal.

This is very interesting. Borges with Pintas and Moreira with Poeira are high up on my list of the better Douro reds.

My experience with Dao reds has been varying. Some have been great, some are relatively simple.
But in general the Dao reds are lower priced than the Douro reds.
