2009 - QUINTA DO VESUVIO VINTAGE PORT

Post by John M. »

ROY POSTED ABOUT THIS 98 POINT RATING A FEW DAYS AGO...

Hot Off the Press: 98WS Rated Vintage Port for only 61.98 a bottle

For the avid user of Wine Spectator's website, you will know about the The Wine Spectator Advance, where they will showcase the highlights of the upcoming issues before the magazines arrive. The highlight of the July 31st edition is this gem below from the Symington Family. Symington Estates is most known for Graham's, Warre's and Dow's, some of the top Porto houses in the world. Quinta do Vesuvio has been on a hot streak lately with both their ports and their table wines, and this most recent score comes as no surprise. This is a can't miss gem for any port lover, and the price tag is almost as shocking as the score! This also has a collector's alert written all over it with only 500 cases of this wonderful wine produced. Don't miss out on what could easily be one of the best port buys this year!

Today's offer is a pre-sale, but will be arriving tomorrow, June 6th.
You can place your orders via the website, or by calling the order department at (888) 980-9463, ext. 2.

98 Points Wine Spectator
"Powerfully rich and refined, with plenty of grip behind the lip-smacking flavors of kirsch, dark plum, chocolate and boysenberry. Shows excellent balance as well, with a silky texture and a long, spicy finish that's accented with hints of licorice and cedar. Best from 2014 through 2034. 500 cases made."

Table wines? I wasn't aware of such a thing, but Google suggests they are out there. SFE needs to update their website, because I could find nothing at http://www.quintadovesuvio.com/our_wines.asp about the table wines. For that matter, the last vintage they have notes for is 2006.

Yes a couple very very good table wines. The Pombal do Vesuvio and the Quinta do Vesuvio Douro. The Pombal is about $23-26 range and the other about $65-70. Check out the Douro wine section I've posted some TN's on them in the past.

I had both the 2009 and 2010 Vesuvio VP's during this trip. I must say that the person rating the 2009 Vesuvio is not someone I'd align my palate to. That score is ridiculous and I loved the 2009 Vesuvio. I've rated it highly when I have had it but nowhere near that stratospheric score. Those of you who have tasted it, what score have you given to the 2009 Vesuvio?

FWIW: My score of 94 is two points higher than Al B. who just may be the biggest Vesuvio fan on the planet.

I did score it 92-94, hedging my bets a little. I've only had it once so far though, and probably need to get back to it again. I might try working my way through a bottle later this year.
