TN: 2009 Quinta do Crasto Douro Old Vines Reserva
2009 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines - Portugal, Douro (8/19/2012)
Looks like blackberry juice. Very deep black fruit nose with some obvious oak. Really chocolate-ty on the palate. Some fine tannins. Long finish. The flavors are classic Douro to me. There is a softer structure than some Crasto VV Reservas. This is still quite young. Drinkable now, but I expect that it will be even more delicious over the next 2-5 years. What really stands out for me is the fruit intensity and the overall balance. Impressive! I should have bought more. (94 pts.)

Wow, it is not often that I see David score HIGHER than me on a DOC wine. ![YIKES! [yahoo.gif]](./images/smilies/yahoo.gif)

True. This is a simply a beautiful wine. Held up well for 5 days. Really smoothed out and was the favorite of everyone at the dinner I went to where we consumed the remainder of the bottle. The lesser wines were a 2005 Saxum "Heartstone" and a 2003 Chateau de la Gardine CdP. This is probably my favorite Crasto Reserva for earlier drinking. I don't yet know if it's better than the 2004 - which is currently my overall favorite.

Agree on the 2004. The 2007 is no slouch either, but the 2009 has huge stuffing with all the material to last and last.

Yeah a rocking wine and it will be fun to see how this fleshes out compared to the 2004. I've flopped back and forth between 2009 being as good or a touch better than the 2004. So time will be the deciding factor.Roy Hersh wrote:Agree on the 2004. The 2007 is no slouch either, but the 2009 has huge stuffing with all the material to last and last.

Dave you inspired me to open a bottle of this last night. I'll just add to your TN on it... a bit oaky at first, then about 2 hours later it integrated well and was no longer dominating the nose. Solid minerality as well as the fruit you mentioned. Darn tasty and glad I've got a bunch more of this left.

This is really a very nice Douro red.
During the summer we had our closest family at the cottage to celebrate one of our kids 30th birthday, and the wine for the evening was 2009 Crasto Reserva. As the oak is noticeable, I decided to have it in the decanter for 3 hrs which appeared to a good move.
Everyone around the table was amazed about this red wine, and especially our three kids.
Emmy and I have now solved part of the Christmas gift challenge.
We travelled to Denmark last week and purchased four cases (each 6 bottles), one to each of the kids and one to ourselves!
i am sure they will be very excited about this big flat package four months from now!
