Best places to shop for Portuguese table wines in the USA?

Post by Marco D. »

I had my eye on some 2001 Tinto da Anfora Grande Escolha (Alentejo) that Astor Wines & Spirits had. Lovely wine at a great price... I kept waiting and darn... it is no longer on their web site.

The only other place that shows up with this wine on WineSearcher is in Portugal and the shipping costs are pretty steep.

Any ideas on where to find this particular wine or what wine stores have a good selection of Portuguese wines (besides The Spanish Table)?

Thanks!

Here is a Wine Shops List of suggested by Ernani Silva. These stores located in in NYC area and (I guess) all have a good selection of Portuguese Wines.
-Mário-

- 67 Wines & Spirits - (212) 724-6767 Evelyn Wing
- Casa Oliveira - (212)929-0760 - Manny
- Ferry Street Liquors, Newark NJ - (973) 589-8251 Paulo or Frank Paredes
- Broadway Wine & Spirits - (914) 220-0248 - Sergio
- Thornwood Wines - (914) 747-8071 - Andy
- Midland Square Wines - (914) 964-9463 - Patrick

Unfortunately I do not know the stores in Connecticut, but I am sure there are many in Bridgeport, Danbury and other centers where many Portuguese are living.

I was told by a good friend of mine that this week he saw this particular wine, Tinto da Anfora Grande Escolha, on sale at

 Wilson Ave – Wilson Seabra’s in Newark, New Jersey.

At this moment I do not have the contact for this store but I'm happy to find out about it.

Mario, you are unreal!!! That's awesome! I checked the web and found "Seabra Supermarket" on 73 Wilson Street. I wonder if that's it? If so, it looks to be in the Ironbound district, so maybe a family road trip is in order, as I always wanted to check the neighborhood out.

Does anybody know if NJ stores can sell wine on Sundays?

 Not a big deal. It just happens that I lived 3 years in the Big Apple: from Sep-2000 until Aug-2003.
Thus I'm very familiar with the New York area in particular !! - :D

Marco - for 2001 Tinto da Anfora - Grande Escolha (Alentejo) I suggest you to try Astor Wines in NYC

Astor Wines is doing a "Discover Lesser known wines from Portugal" wine tasting event and the Tinto da Anfora has been chosen for this.

Funny you should mention this... This was where I originally purchased the wine and, although the wine is no longer on their website, I recently heard back from them that the wine can be re-ordered.

Marco,

I am simply amazed that you have never visited the Ironbound district in Newark. Given your roots, the opportunity for incredible Portuguese restaurants there should be enough of a reason to make the trip. Visit on a Saturday afternoon and then have dinner there after walking around. It is as close to being in Portugal as you can come, within the USA.

Yeah, I know... When I no longer have to rake leaves on the weekend I fully intend on getting in there. Maybe I can even find a place that has live Fado with dinner. One of my fondest memories from my last trip to Portugal was wandering the Alfama district and stumbling into a little hole-in-the-wall Fado bar where the singing was absolutely soul-stirring.
