What would be a good deal for you, then? Where else are you going to get a 31-year old VP that's rated in the low 90s for $60?

I'm with Moses on this. £40 per bottle for Gould Campbell 1983...I'd think "That's not a bad price", tell a few friends and not buy any for myself. I don't need any more port - at least that's what I keep telling myself and I have been pretty good recently. Since my birthday in October last year the only port I have purchased was 3 ex-cellars DMs of Sandeman Vau 2000 @ GBP 62 (USD 100) per DM and 2 bottles of Cockburn 1927 for GBP 70 (USD 110) per bottle. Both of those were priced so I couldn't resist.

But I really don't need more port...

I don't need more Port, either. But as Andy pointed out, need != want. And when the price is that good, want wins out for me. ;-)

If it were 1977 or 1970 for $60, then I'd put pen to check.

You think $60 for a really good 31 year old VP is too much? Wow!

I don't think it is too much, but I'm with Moses and Al. I don't need it, and as for wants, I'm thinking I might take my $60 and buy some colheitas that are on sale at BPW today.

D'oh! Too late. The Kopke Colheita Port -- 1981, $39 for a 750, sold out.

I don't need any Port either. But I've got a cellar full and am very happy for that [cheers.gif]

Need?

What does that have to do with anything?

After buying 2000 VP's I knew I would not NEED any more Port in my life. That hasn't stopped me in years like 2003, a small buy in 2007 and an increase with 2011. I'll likely never drink any and certainly not many of the post 1994 Ports I've purchased, but I still am willing to buy when the price is fair. I do want to leave a great and well rounded Port cellar to my daughter so she will be set for oldies when she gets older. By the time she is 40 years old, she won't need much for her latter years. I wish my parents had been Port consumers who left me set up with old vintages. Born to the wrong parents for that I guess. My daughter on the other hand, will be able to learn about all the older vintages she'll be inheriting. I pretty much plan to drink everything up to 1994 and only leave a smattering of older goodies.

Putting aside need vs. want, there is a relative need. For my drinking pleasure, I need more 1970 (a variety of producers would suffice) and 1992 and 1997 Quinta do Vesuvio, more than I need 1983 Gould Campbell for $60. Of course the 1970s won't be going for that price, but the Vesuvio might.

I think that one issue is that in recent years there have been sales of ex-cellars bottles of this at $39 and $49, so that $60 a year or two later, does sound expensive.
