1955 Dow Vintage Port MB*****

Michael Broadbent tasting note: Countless good notes from the mid-1960s. Never very deep in colour though firm and flavoury. In June 1994 a couple of bottles at a Dow tasting in Aspen, a lovely London-bottled wine with a silkily tannic texture, the other very fragrant with a more peppery finish. Around this time some other bottles tending to dry out through very flavoury, with a lingering finish. Then vanilla and liquorice noted, and a touch of acidity creeping up. But a superb bottle at the bicentenary tasting. I could not fault it.

1970 Graham Vintage Port MB*****

Michael Broadbent tasting note: The Graham family's last vintage. Originally (July 1972) opaque, still deep, plummy and fairly intense, showing rich extract; fragrant, high-toned yet harmonious bouquet though still a bit hard; very sweet, full-bodied, lots of fruit, grip, length, tannin and acidity. Chocolate and spice. Well over two dozen nots since 1982, all consistently good. In the mid-1990s, lovely, distinctive, very sweet. Equal top marks, Oporto-bottled, at Gidleigh Park, still with leathery tannins. Coping miraculously at a Zachys/Christie's charity dinner with chocolate souffle. Showing well at the Primum Familiae Vini dinner at Vinopolis in November 2000. A superb bottle at a dinner party at home, May 2001. Most recently: soft tawny-red; gloriously fragrant and flowery; complete, excellent.

Michael Broadbent tasting note: A very good wine. Almost black in colour in 1979: a big, apple-nosed, very sweet, rich but angular wine. Gradual colour loss through the 1980s but, as it matured, a wonderful melange of fragrances developing: liquorice, strawberry, fig; fleshy, lovely fruit. Nearly 20, always admiring, notes. Showing well at a Gidleigh Park port tasting in 1995: medium-deep with red-brown rim; very rich, powerful bouquet opening up beautifully; sweet, good body and backbone, marvellous length, spicy finish. Most recently: delicious!

1991 Dow Vintage Port (375 ml) MB*****

Michael Broadbent tasting note: Five consistently good notes. First in 1993, very distinctive. Next at a Dow vertical in Aspen in June 1994, then a very high mark at a Symington tasting that autumn and at the MW tasting in 1995. Initially an intense mulberry colour, still deep, velvety; powerful yet harmonious nose, rich, figgy; very sweet, crisp, good flesh and fruit.
