50 GREAT PORTUGUESE WINES BY CHARLES METCALFE

For the third consecutive year, Wines of Portugal organised the 50 Great Portuguese Wines tasting at the Portuguese Embassy on Thursday 8th February 2007. After winning the 2006 Journalist Award, Charles Metcalfe was invited to choose the group of 50 wines for this year’s tasting.

Despite the heaviest snow fall of the last 7 years, more than 150 guests were dazzled by the quality of Charles’s choice of wines. With the help of the 20 producers and winemakers, this overwhelming turnout reflects the improvement in the image of Portuguese wines, and means that in 2008 this event will have to be relocated to a bigger venue.

In 2006, Portugal increased table wine exports to the UK by 5% (source: World Trade Atlas) and saw sales through the on-trade rise by 32% in volume and 24% in value (source: Nielsen). This dramatic increase in a year when the market has been flat clearly shows that Portuguese wines are on the rise.

In Charles Metcalfe’s speech at the tasting, he said “after 10 trips to Portugal in 2006, researching my new book about Portuguese wines, I was asked to choose my top 50. When I went through all my tasting notes, I found I had 300 I’d like to put into the tasting – the really difficult task was limiting it to the 50 best”.

Amongst the guests were Jane MacQuitty, Robert Joseph, Jamie Goode, Waitrose buyer Nick Room, Harrods buyer Alistair Viner and La Trompette Sommelier Matthieu Longuère.

Vasco D’Avillez, President of ViniPortugal states “we are proud to see so many great Portuguese wines available in the UK market”.

António Silva, Director of ICEP Portugal in London says that “the success of this tasting confirms the growing interest in Portuguese wines in the UK market”.

Charles Metcalfe's 50 Portuguese Wines [London-2007]

50 Great Portuguese Wines by Charles Metcalfe

Portuguese Embassy [London-UK]
Thursday 8th February 2007

An Introduction from Charles Metcalfe

It is wonderful, after about 20 years writing and talking about Portuguese wines, to say that it has been really difficult to make a selection of my Top 50, not because there aren’t enough good wines, but because there are too many. When my wife and I wrote our first book about Iberian wines 20 years ago, we would certainly have found 50 wines to recommend, but there may not have been many more. That first book was full of words such as ‘potential’ and ‘promise’. Yes, there are still some regions in
Portugal where greater things are to come – Algarve, Azores and Beira Interior spring to mind – but most other regions are already at or near the top of their game.

And it is a game a new generation of winemakers has advanced. The young winemaking heroes I met when I first visited Portugal have become senior figures in the industry, and the inspiration they provided has fired younger men and women to study oenology and viticulture. Many of these now have positions in large companies or work as consultants for lots of smaller ones. And these younger winemakers have travelled. They’ve seen how wines are made in the rest of Europe, and in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and California as well. They are the new Discoverers, and the knowledge they have acquired enriches the land they return to.

There have also been disappointments on the ten trips I made to Portugal in 2006. It is sad to see historic denominations such as Colares and Carcavelos gradually disappearing beneath a wave of seaside villas. But another, Bucelas, is in much better shape than it was 20 years ago. There’s much more confidence in Dão and Bairrada as well.

Because this is an attempt to choose 50 wines, I have limited myself to a maximum of two wines from any single producer. There are some producers from whom I could have selected five wines without a problem, but it would have meant excluding others.
A few wines are not yet available in the UK, but I’ve tried to make this principally a selection of wines that are already here.

There will be many other wines to hunt out when ‘The Wine & Food Lover’s Guide to Portugal’ comes out in May. But I hope you enjoy this snapshot of a few of Portugal’s top wines as much as I have enjoyed tasting them.

Welcome from The Ambassador of Portugal

I am delighted to welcome you to The Portuguese Embassy and to this very special tasting of 50 Great Portuguese Wines. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Charles Metcalfe for accepting this challenge and to the team at Wines of Portugal for organising this splendid event.

I am sure you will enjoy the diversity of the wines Charles has chosen, as you have the opportunity to experience some of the flavours and grape varieties that are unique to Portugal and that make our wines so distinctive.

With best wishes,
António SantanaCarlos
