TN: 2003 Quinta do Coa -- (Organic)

Post by Derek T. »

I picked this up in an organic food shop in the UK for £9

A very dark and attractive colour, almost opaque. The nose is quite closed and there are thick tears sticking to the glass. The predominant taste is of blackcurrant and the wine is heavy and very smooth with a nice long finish - just my kind of wine 8)

I think this would benefit from 3 or 4 years in the cellar. It is very dry and tannic which, I think, is hiding lots of great fruity flavours.

I did not know they where organic wines. I did taste the 2004 regular and reserve cask sample last year. I really like these wines, they are made by Carm madeira wine company within the delimited National park of Coa boundaries( further east of Vesuvio ). They are also producing very nice wine under the Carm label. Also try to get the Carm Grande Escolha olive oil, one of the best I could taste from the Douro yet. If you want to know more http://www.carm.pt

I don't have the name at hand but you have to taste the old vine white wine that the brother of Carm owner is making from a close vineyard in the Coa region, it is really impressive.

All wines and olive oils of CARM are organic.

Fred, the white you refer to is either the Castello d'Alba Branco Reserva (from vines >60 yrs) or the Castello d'Alba Vinhas Velhas (from even older vines).
