1994 Niepoort Colheita Port

Post by Andy Velebil »

(b. 2005) I've had numerous bottles of this and it remains my favorite young Colheita. I opened this yesterday at the end of a wine dinner for a few who wanted to try it. As I finish the remains tonight, I now realize my original assesment last night was correct. This is an off-bottle. This bottle had too much alcohol showing, even when chilled down, and 24 hours later this is still the case. Not a normal thing for this particular Colheita. It was also a bit simple, which is not normal either. The finish was still long and spicy, but just not up to par compared to other bottles of this. A shame as this is normally a very nice young colheita. N/R

My favourite young Colheita as well

Andy,

I had a bottle of Niepoorts Colheita 94 (b. 06) with Alex in Munich this year and I have tasted these and the ones bottled in 04 numerous times as well. I never had a bad bottle so far (fingers crossed), so up to now I cant share this experience with you (and hopefully never will). The 06-bottled are in my oppinion noticeably better than the ones bottled in 04.

I will be meeting Dirk and Vanessa next month in Vila Nova and will ask them about this.

All the best

Axel

P.S.: If you are a colheita fan, try the Noval 82 Colheita as this is very reasonable priced

Axel,

I just looked at my old notes, and all the previous ones I've had were a 2006 bottling. Wonder if that was the difference. I've got one more bottle from 2005, so I shall open it soon and see if it was an off-bottle or just the difference in the extra year in wood.
