table wines of the Douro at my local liquor store

Post by Scheiny S »

this is this week's newsletter from a local liquor store. it's the highest grossing store in the state [PA], it's very big. but i scowl when people call it "the fancy liquor store" because their Port selection is surprisingly pedestrian and their Sherry and Madiera selections are almost non-existent. i've heard they have a good selection of whiskeys, which i'm not into, and of wine but i don't know enough about wine to know.
are 1, 2, 3, or 7 worth getting to drink now?

Douro, Portugal
Why discuss Portuguese wines? Portugal presents some of the greatest value in the wine world. The wines of Portugal are usually very affordable, and very well crafted wines.
Today I decided to focus on the Douro region of Portugal. Although the Douro is known for Port wine; the red and white table wines of the Douro are also an excellent choice.

Celebrated as the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, the Douro is essentially famed for producing a fortified wine unique to this region – Port wine. Over the decades since 1756, when the Douro region first started producing high-quality wine, the landscape has been transformed into a beautiful terraced valley sculpted by man that is now classified as a UNESCO world heritage site.

The once rugged terrain and steep hillsides looked almost impossible to cultivate but following years of hard work, the remote land was dramatically changed into stepped terrace and the impressive vineyards began to take shape. It is these historical terraces that make the Douro region so special and led to the recognised heritage status.

The Douro river and additional smaller rivers twist and turn through this area and the mountain ranges of Marão and Montemuro shelter some of the vineyards from winds, creating fantastic warm conditions ideal for growing succulent grapes.

There is an abundance of grape varieties in the Douro with several of the old gnarled vines so mature they produce a full and intricate wine incomparable with anything else. Top varieties in Douro wine-making include Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão and Tinta Roriz. And it is not just Port wine, delicious red and white wines are also produced from the Douro vineyards.

Here are some Douro Wines in store Now!!!
1.) Quevedo 2011 Cláudia's Reserve Red (Douro) #46539 $16.99
A ripe, tannic and herbal wine, this has been produced for aging. It shows a dark tannic side over the juicy black plum fruits and berry flavors. The wood aging shows in the way the wine smoothes out at the end, leaving a rich, full-bodied aftertaste. Drink from 2016. 91 Points Wine Enthusiast

2.) Quinta De Porrais Douro Red 2012 #46539 $14.99
From vineyards north of the Douro River on the plateau, this wine shows both richness and a fine cool, elegant style. The wood aging has given the wine depth and extra richness, adding to the berry fruits with spice and hints of toast. It's a wine to drink soon, full of fruit and balanced tannins. Drink from 2017. 90 Points Wine Enthusiast

3.) Duorum Douro Tons De Duorum 2013 #49634 $13.99
This is a big, beefy and structured wine that at the same time is laden with fruit. A reminder of the tough schist soil of the Douro, the wine's mineral edge is balanced by the bright juicy fruit and acidity. With the tannins, this second wine from Duorum will age well, so drink from 2016.

4.) Rozes Douro Terras Do Grifo Branca 2014 #49772 $19.99
This is an attractive wine that is given a perfumed lift by the inclusion of Malvasia Fina in the blend. It is fresh and young, emphasizing the crisp character and chalky texture typical of the Douro whites. The wine is cool, fresh, and fruity.

5.) Prats Symington Post Scriptum 2012 #49692 $24.99
This wine is stylish, with layers of wood, black currant notes and a structure that will allow the juicy fruitiness to develop relatively quickly. It's balanced, with fruit, texture and acidity all coming together. Drink from 2016. 91 Points Wine Enthusiast

6.) Quinta De La Rosa Dourosa Estate Reserve Red 2011 #47037 $51.99
A powerful red, with luscious spiced aroma and rich, ripe and intense flavors of blackberry, dark plum and boysenberry and licorce. This is backed by plenty of fresh acidity, presenting a crisp finish filled with zesty spiced cherry notes. 95 Points Wine Spectator

7.) Prats Symington Prazo De Roriz 2011 #49554 #14.99
It starts out with spice, a slightly muddled schist scent that clarifies with air. Underneath, the wine is lithe, its flavors muscular and powerful without showing any excess alcohol, its dark and supple fruit drawing juice from the schist tannins. Buy it by the case to drink over the next several years." 93 Points Wine & Spirits Magazine

There's a few good deals there. PA can be weird with pricing. Most things are on the high end and then there's absolute amazing deals now and then.

You wouldn't go wrong with any of them at the listed price points. Obviously, for the lesser priced ones you should get one bottle of each to start, taste them and see what you like for a good daily value wine and go back for more.

Looks like a really good price on the de la Rosa Reserva.

You won't go wrong with the Quevedo

I'm hit and miss with Post Scriptum. But they tend to be worth that pricing for a good in-between bottle, not spending too little or too much.
