At which age do you plan upon terminating your VP purchases for personal consumption?

At which age will you stop purchasing VP?

Post by Jay Woodruff »

Interestingly enough I see posts from people already considering when they will stop or greatly slow their purchasing of current vintage VP. Many times this is by age 40.

Now I will always buy some VP as I enjoy VP both young and mature. It is also fun to taste VP upon release and at ages 5, 10, 15, etc... up through maturity. But there will be the day where, even if I have the funds to source multiple cases of a fine VP from the current vintage, I won't. I will purchase a few bottles to enjoy and maybe a few to hand down if I think anyone will care. Like many others that is when finding older vintages makes sense.

Keep in mind that not all VP will last for 50 years. Some are early drinkers. In fact some VP, such as Niepoort Secundum, is geared towards early drinking, a trend which may fan out to some other new labels as consumer like to wait ever less it seems for rewards. Secondly, people are living longer. You just might make it past 100 is you drink your galss of VP every day!

So, when will you stop buying VP (other than tasters for fun) for PERSONAL consumption? If you are buying for children/grandchildren, that does not count.

You know, Jay, that all polls are flawed, don't you?

I voted for "Never," though not because shipments will arrive after my death, but rather because one can always find deals on older Vintage Porto. So why stop?

Cheers,
Jason

Unfortunately the poll does not seem to be working.

Being in the under 30 age category I have not thought about not buying, I'm more in the hoarding phase! Based on how I enjoy VP now I would think I'll continue to buy for a long as can (new or older vintages).

I agree with Jason. I am 48 and think that 2003 will definitely be my last "new" vintage that I will invest in. That said, I NEVER will stop buying well-stored older bottles of VPs and Colheita and the occasional 20 year old Tawny. Yeah, maybe an LBV on occasion too. But your poll does not represent stopping purchases of NEW releases or YOUNG vintage Ports. It reads as if we'd have to go cold turkey and guys like Jason and me, would have to be checked into rehab if that happened!
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

Stupid polls!

Will need to practice the polling. Nonetheless, I do mean the current vintage of VP releases.

I think most port lovers will ALWAYS be buying SOME port (usually older vintages, Tawny, LBV, etc...) but I was more interested in when one will stop buying the latest vintage in bulk.

I think in another thread someone already said they'll not purchase much 2003 since they are now 40 years old. So for that person, it is 40. He may purchase more from the 90's, 80's, 70's, etc... from now on ... but not much from 2003 forward.

As for you Roy, didn't I hear the same "This is my last!" during the release of the 2000 VPs??? ;)
