PORT FOR TRADE?

I often wonder why this particular area of the Forum has not become more of a real "marketplace" where users trade, buy & sell to one another ... whether Port, Madeira or even Douro wines?

I think it would be great to see more of this kind of activity here as right now it is mostly used as a bulletin board to share Port and/or Madeira offerings by retailers. But I believe it could become an interactive way to find wines that are well stored from friends here or at least other FTLOPers that you either know or have yet to meet.

For whatever reason, the "trade" between known users has never really taken off. Or sale between FTLOPers. I thought there would be far more of that kind of commercialism here and have been surprised. But it is your Marketplace, do with it as you will.

The one thing I've noticed about Port lovers is that unlike our dry wine counterparts, we tend to hoard bottles. Maybe becuase they last so long in the cellar we don't want to get rid of them, even for a trade. We think of them as our holy grails to one day be opened on that special occassion or just to share with friends. I don't know if that is the reason, but just a thought I've had over the years.

Not sure hoard is the right term. For me, I do not want to miss the opportunity to drink the port I am sending off. Not that I am hoarding to keep forever, as I am game to drink whatever bottle I have... I just want to be present while it's being consumed. Like tutoring someone your whole life and not getting to seem them graduate... Sure it's good hear they graduated, but even better to share the experience.

I am open to trade bottles I have more than one of for similarly tiered bottles. Maybe this winter will be the opportunity?

Yeah hoarding probably isn't the best term, and its not ment to be a negative thing, but you get the idea.

I can assure you there are lots of collective port purchases and distribution of "surplus" bottles going on in the UK but it tends to be done by PM and email, possibly due to people being hesitant to discuss money in an open forum.

Cross-Atlantic port trading is always going to be difficult unless the quantities are extremely small or you have storage on both sides of the pond.

I'm not sure about the rules in other countries but I believe that in the UK is actually illegal for private individuals to sell alchohol to one another which is another reason for keeping the "trading" behind closed doors.

On line ... we talk in terms of "trades" Derek. In emails, other types of exchanges may take place. So mentioning a "trade" here, certainly will lead to folks pursuit of further discussion which is held privately, of course. Prices need never be mentioned, but bringing up a wine that is available for trade, opens up the dialogue that will ensue.

Personally, I don't have enough "surplus" of any particular Port to trade, but in light of this thread, if I did, I might post something simliar to other wine forums, sans pricing.

I have used ebob's marketplace before to fill in some missing years in a non-Port vertical that I have going. While the usually DO list prices on the ebob forum, we could leave them off here and do the negotiation via PM or email.

I think that these kinds of trades ARE likely taking place, but no one knows about them because they are taking place entirely via PM or email.

Stewart is correct. I know of many, including Madeira that go on behind the scenes. It would be plenty of fun to bring some of these trades to light and create a really great marketplace.

Isn´t a bad idea, but sadly I haven't got enough port yet. But I wouldn't main to buy or sell ( when I'll have ), to one another. I see it quiete easy to do it :) .
