N.V. Carvalho & Filhos (José Viseu) Porto Special Reserve Wh

Post by Erik Wiechers »

Today i bought 2 bottles of this Port. This is a White Colheita from the ultra rare 1973 vintage. Due to regulations "1973" is not allowed on the label, maybe because of the revolution then ? One of only two vintages of 1973 Port that I know to exist.
The seller in the store told me that they discovered a few forgotten barrels a few years back. The bottles were bottled in 2007. I dont know if its true, but it certainly is a nice story.

TN's on cellartracker look promising, but i will hold these bottles for some time.

Although a very good white, its not in the same league as the Dalva...then again, not many Ports are

Strangely, Frederick tried to get me to taste this wine in Vinologia in Oporto two nights ago. He seemed to rate it very highly but unfortunately they had none left.

If this wine is entirely from the 1971 vintage I can't understand why they could not state the vintage on the label as Dalva do this with their 1952 and Krohn do it with their Colheita Branco (White) 1964. Perhaps it is a blend that mainly contains the 1971?

Its actually from the 1973 vintage and due to the regulations and not being delcared early on for a specific use, it can not be label with a vintage year on the front label. IIRC, the rear label does mention that this is from the 73 vintage. When we meet the producers last year on the Harvest Tour we gave them some good ideas on what to put on the back label of future bottles...not sure if that happened or not. A bit of trivia about this is part of it was fortified with the German industrial Arguardente (from the "scandle") and then blended together with barrels that used "real" arguardente.

Glad you found this. I found this during my one trip to Porto and upon my return searched and searched until I found a case. I also bought a number of the 1952 Dalva. In my opinion, the Dalva is better, but my wife prefers the Casa Santa Eufemia. I have found both to be great ports, perhaps more so due to my low expectations of whites in general, but how can you go wrong when the "young" one is 35 years old!

Enjoy.

I purchased Maria Theresa´s last bottle of this at AVEPOD yesterday. The rear label does not say that it is from 1973 - merely that it is "over 30 years old."

After I returned to my room I noticed that the label did not say 1973, so that's why I'm logged on now in the Pestana Porto instead of drinking at Vinologia! I wanted to find this thread and confirm that my bottle looks just like Eric's, which it does some I now feel much better.

One more day in Porto tomorrow, then we head back home on Sunday. With luck we will be able to link up with Roy when he arrives tomorrow!

Andy,

I didn't have regular internet access while in Portugal, and only checked the forums that one time. I was at Vinologia on Saturday night hoping that you guys would show up, but the place was packed and we couldn't get in at around 8:30. :(

I had my cell phone with me, but I think only Derek and Roy have that number. Besides, Roy doesn't text and Derek and I haven't been able to get text messages to work between us for some odd reason. Next time I'll make sure more people have my number!
