Port with a Story,
the 2nd Chapter

A week ago, we offered one of the great Port bargains of recent years: 1983 Dow from the cellar of an elite London private club.

We did so well with our offer that the club has rewarded us with a cache of
1983 Warre at an even more amazing price: $69.95!

The story of our '83 Warre purchase, like that of the Dow, is one of aging memberships and economic hardship for London's clubs. For more than a century these bastions of British society had some of the Empire's most extensive Port collections. But times have changed, and so have tastes. As a result, the amount of Port still resting in the clubs' cellars is much less than it once was. Yet, still, on occasion, one of the clubs sells off a chunk of their collection.

This particular quarry comes from a venerable club in St. James's Square, not far from Christie's. Though we were asked not to publicize the name of the club, it has a rich history, having been founded in the middle part of the 19th century for officers of the British army and navy and "servants" of the East India Company.

The bottles are still in their original wood cases, with very good labels, levels and capsules. When you think about it, it is really incredible that you can buy a nearly three-decade-old Vintage Port of such stature for a lower price than far more recent vintages ... but such is the state of today's market. It's an opportunity we urge you to take advantage of.

For case buyers: please let us know if you'd like the original wood case.

Late February expected arrival.

1983 Warre Vintage Port*
$69.95 bottle $825 case (owc available on request)

Robert Parker: "(Warre's) vintage ports ... have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1983 is richly perfumed and fragrant, which is so typical of the ports from this vintage...."
