Ramos Pinto Collector (reserve ruby). This had a t-stopper style of cork. Drunk 1/23/2010.
Dark red color. Modest nose -- some leather, some generic pleasant red fruit notes. Somewhat spicey and raw taste. Sweetness is moderate. Good fruitiness -- raspberry, black currant. Medium aftertaste. Some tannin. Alcohol well integrated. I would rate this 79/100.
The "raw taste" may be a poor descriptor. I would say that in my experience this "raw taste" is typical of reserve ruby Ports as compared with late bottled vintage Ports. I can't think of a word or words to describe this sensation more distinctly or clearly. A rough edge.
This Port was a distinct quality level below the late bottled vintage Ports I have drunk, which is to be expected. This bottle cost $17.99; the LBVs I've been drinking lately are in the range $23.99-$27.99. This Port strikes me as forceful and frank. I liked it. I think it may be a little more lively and intense than the other reserve rubies I have drunk.
(added after completing remainder of bottle on next day, 1/24/2010)
I was less satisfied with the Collector on the second day. It was just less vivid and lively to me. Maybe this was more of a lack of my receptiveness -- got up at 5:30 AM to go into the office and worked a full-day, so definitely tired by the time I got around to drinking the remaining Collector.

Re: Ramos Pinto Collector
I think I know what you mean. It's probably the same thing that I usually call a bit of a bite.Michael Hann wrote:The "raw taste" may be a poor descriptor. Nice note! Ramos Pinto Collector is something I've heard of but haven't seen out here.
