1966 Sandemans Vintage Port (Portugal)
I bought this along as it was Sophie’s birth year. Coincidently, it was also the year that England last won the Football World Cup. Ah, those were the days! After scraping off the black wax and extracting the cork whole (the odds were against me), I decanted it for 2 hours. The taste when I first opened it was a very youthful cherry and marzipan taste, with a dash of hot alcohol. This has been my experience with the previous 5 bottles I have opened from the case that I bought. The youthfulness almost defies belief and the first time I saw this, I was very surprised. The Port then spent 4.5 hours in bottle before we drank it with the cheese course. It was noticeably darker, slightly dull strawberry red. Dry dates and fine dry herbs waft from my glass. The semi-sweet middle palate is slightly alcoholic, still youthful and shows hints of savouryness. The finish is long, moderately complex and well worthy of the occasion. 93/100.
