Where to drink port and/or madeira by the glass in NYC

None of the wine bars seem to have any focus on dessert wines at all. I checked out Roy's post about Alfama which, frankly, is the best I've seen, but that's not saying much. New York should be able to do way better. Are there any hidden gems I've been missing?

Re: TN: H&H Inauguration Wine

I've had 3 bottles of this wine. The first was from the 2006 bottling. It was the only bad bottle of madeira that I've experienced: nearly undrinkable over a week of testing. Very acidic, alcoholic, no fragrance the first two days. Decanted on the third day. Improved slightly on the fourth day. Aft...

TN: Henriques & Henriques Inauguration Wine

This is a wine of unknown origin, produced during the 1950s, either verdelho or bual according to the label (tastes like verdelho to me). ~150 bottled in 2006, and the remaining 150 bottled in April 2008, which is the bottling I am drinking. The bottle has been open for a month. Despite Rare Wine Co...

Re: Early thoughts from a newbie

I had a chance to meet Mannie Berk the other day, and asked him if the madeira market was growing. He responded with "completely flat." I found that rather surprising, considering the incredible growth other artisinal alcoholic beverages are seeing, including craft beer, scotch, rum, mezca...

Re: New wine - Henriques & Henriques 20 year old Terrantez

Marco, I wish I'd known you were there, I'd have liked to meet you! I agree with your picks 100%, btw. The 1912 Verdelho was the wine of the show for me too, by a large margin. It had a maple flavor to it that was outstanding, mixed with lemon meringue pie... so good. Runner up was the D'Oliveira 19...

Re: New wine - Henriques & Henriques 20 year old Terrantez

I had an opportunity to try this at an industry event in NYC last week (long story, I'm not involved in the wine industry but I lucked out) and I was not very impressed, nor was I impressed with any other wines in H&H's line-up. I can't give much in the way of details (there was an awful lot of ...

Andy, I wish I had your problem...wait...I did! Check the thread "Help me select a flight of madeira" that I posted last year. Joe, I remember that thread! It was when I'd first joined the forum here, and I was very jealous that someone had the opportunity to try all these wines at relati...

Re: What madeira would you get from this list?

Have always wanted to go to Berns. One of these days I'll make it. Would definitely go for the 1877 Borges Terrantez. Other interesting things include the 1905 D'Oliveiras Verdelho, 1880 Blandy Verdelho, 1920 Favilla Bual, 1933 Justino Malmsey, and the 1907 D'Oliveiras Malvasia. I definitely had my...

Re: TN: Barbeito Single Harvest Colheita Meio Seco 1997

Fertilizer? In a nasty fecal, chemical way; or a nice earthy, forest floor way? Well, I didn't want to say "poop," but there was definitely a note of that in there. But no, not in a particularly bad way; I guess you could say "forest floor" if you wanted to put a glossy sheen on...

What madeira would you get from this list?

http://www.bernssteakhouse.com/Portals/0/Documents/HWRDessertMenuWine.pdf My wife won a free trip for two to Orlando, so we'll be traveling down there some time in November and hope to go to this place with a friend. The madeira list is insane and a bit overwhelming. I plan on getting at least one p...

TN: Barbeito Single Harvest Colheita Meio Seco 1997

Bottled in February 2007, 100% Tinta Negra Mole. RWC is selling a whole line of these single harvest and/or single cask Barbeito madeiras at the moment, $35 each/500ml. This bottle has been open and consumed slowly for the past couple months. Pours a slightly musty, slightly cloudy deep golden brown...

Does the Chartreuese gain anything in aging or it just collectors value because its old? I assume the latter.

Any idea what this madeira is?

http://i.imgur.com/uMiCX.jpg A Swedish guy on a site I'm on came into this bottle along with a bunch of other pretty mediocre stuff ( http://imgur.com/a/XBaa5 ) and I'm trying to help him figure out what it is. I assume its junk, judging from the lack of age statement or grape label, but you never ...

Re: TN: Blandy's 5 Year old Bual

I had a taste of this recently as well and was very surprised at its quality given its age and price. This is an excellent every day madeira, and IMO puts the twice-as-expensive Boston Bual to shame, which I've found dull and lifeless and very lacking in acidity.
