On the island of Porto Santo, (part of Madeira's archipelago) this mostly wind-blown barren land has some interesting areas with vines that produce some unique grape varieties with different character than anything else I've experienced. Some possess similar qualities to Madeira, but also contrasting distinctions too. Here we were tasting directly from some older casks that remain part of a family's treasure.

Next Tuesday in San Diego, 36 people will attend a seminar in which I will be presenting these half dozen Vintage Ports. We will compare and contrast the unique characteristics of Grahams and Fonseca from the three excellent vintages shown, from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.
