Earlier this year, I noticed on FTLOP’s Forum, a thread started by a Madeira loving friend in Wadersloh, Germany. His name, Dr. Wolf Peter Reutter, who I first met in Seattle a dozen years ago, in January 2007. His brother Hans lived nearby at the time and worked for Microsoft, and we met as well. The event was a Madeira tasting that the brothers and other friends attended, and Peter wrote about afterwards.

In reverse chronology, the last time Peter and I saw one another was at the great Terrantez tasting that took place in NYC in 2012, and Hans joined us to video and photograph this it for archival purposes. Prior to that, it was at an eclectic Madeira event here in July 2009, with several serious local Madeira freaks, that was organized as soon as I learned Peter was coming to the USA that summer.

In May 2006, the brothers Reutter launched a website, Madeira Wine Guide. Peter was the content guy and Hans the technical whiz; and in my opinion, it was and still is, the most informative Madeira site in the world. So when I read Peter’s post in February of this year, mentioning that he was considering shutting down MWG, and that by the end of 2018 it would no longer exist, I got in touch with him in a hurry and was incredulous when learning of the severity of Peter’s medical situation; especially given his age.

FTLOP immediately offered to maintain Madeira Wine Guide; providing Peter and Hans all rights to take it back at any time they please. I assured their continued ownership of the name and content and they were thrilled that Peter’s in-depth Madeira material would remain accessible on the web. Nearly a decade ago, I offered to share the FTLOP Forum on his site for his loyal Madeira fans, so this was a natural progression.

You can find the Madeira Wine Guide here: https://www.fortheloveofport.com/madeira-wine-guide/ Sincere thanks to Hans Reutter and Stewart Todd for their continued work in bringing this to fruition; and Dr. Wolf Peter Reutter in trusting FTLOP to properly preserve and grow MWG’s content. We plan to add some new content to MWG in 2019. I’m extremely happy to report that Peter has survived his serious battle and subsequent surgeries and is convalescing at home, surrounded by his loving family!
