About The Port Lover's Library
The Port Lover's Library was established in 1996 to cater to the interests of Port Wine Devotees, the Port Trade and most importantly, for Port Wine Bibliophiles or Portonian’s as I refer to all of us so inclined. The Port Lover's Library is an independent for profit, albeit modest, privately owned business operating under the aegis of Isaac Oelgart Productions. It is not affiliated with any Port shippers, grape growers or Port related associations. Its primary mission is the greater glorification of Vinho do Porto, or Port wine, and its literature and the collecting thereof. To that end, The Port Lover's Library publishes a variety of attractive pamphlets and books of lasting value on the history, production, distribution, enjoyment and literature of Port Wine.
On occasion The Port Lover's Library will offer privately printed works of interest to wine book collectors. While not directly related to Port, these works encourage and support the collecting of wine books in general and thus indirectly have a bearing on Port. The Port Lover's Library also offers new, used, out-of-print and rare books of interest to Port and wine book collectors.
The Port Lover's Library occasionally offers new books published by other American publishers, as well as English and European books on Port that are not distributed in the United States or Canada. Selected titles from within this category will be finely bound, signed and limited to only 21 copies for the PLL's XXI CLVB, these books, like exceptional vintage ports, are worthy of laying down for future generations (see Port And The Douro ).

The Portonian Series of contemporary original works are specially commissioned works written by individuals from within the Port Trade or by writers who write about the Port Wine. These are offset printed in two or three colors in a larger more handsome format, 10 X 7 inches, with ample margins. They feature intelligent typography, very good neutral pH paper, high quality neutral pH covers, printed paper labels and are hand sewn with linen or silk thread. They are limited to 240 numbered copies for sale and are hand numbered by the publisher and signed by their respective author. Prices range from $40.00 to $60.00

The IVP was established in 1933 to Test, Regulate, Serve and Protect the best interests of Port and to that end the IVP published a wide variety of material on all aspects of Port. All are bound into the book, with each of the three pages initialed by Mayson. Also included is a full color numbered and signed reproduction of one of Leo Duff's illustrations. The book is signed in full by Mayson, Duff, Judy Conant, the bookbinder and by Isaac Oelgart, the publisher. It is hand bound in 3/4 leather, with paper over boards, using the best leather, hand marbled endpapers, leather spine label with gilt lettering, gilt rules, blind stamping, etc. Nice black cloth slipcase. Port Bills of Lading
A Very Nice Holding of Port Bills of Lading dated From 1785 to 1823
Bills of leading are official records of shipping identifying; who the shippers was, the date, the name of the ship, the name of the Captain and what was being ship and to where. Also included on bills of lading is how the cargo was marked and in some cases the burnt mark or branded mark of the shipper cost of the shipping and the number of Bills of leading and usually signed by the captain as well as other terms and or conditions.
On the 1785 bill of lading the following information is written on a blank printed form.
James Brett is shipping of 29 pipes of Port Wine on April 25, 1785, on the ship Ann, captained by John Barnard, bound for the Port of London for Langston & Dixon and the cargo is marked LD1, LD2 and LDW at forty shillings per ton with three Bills of leading.
Bills of lading from this era have a very low survival rate due to several factors. I like Bills of lading as they are original source material that reveals a lot of history on a relatively small document. I am not aware of any writings or research on Port Bills of lading – an area of study worth pursuing.
Beginning around the middle of the 19th century, as the art of engraving began to flourish for commercial use and Bills of lading sometimes have nice engravings on them, often with maritime themes. which adds considerably to their value. While I have looked for such Bills in the shipment of Port, I haven’t been able to find any so executed. I purchase most I came across and have photocopies of 30 others from the same period that I copied from archives in England.
While they are hard to find, very few collectors have ventured in the field of Port Bills of leading, probably because they are hard to find in the US. I have found most of mine in England – the destination for most Port leaving Oporto. My collection would make an excellent start. I should add the 18th century Bills of lading are quite rare.
My holding consists of 36 originals documents: 1 from 1785; 5 from 1798; 2 from 1811; 7 from 1812; 6 from 1815; 6 from 1818; 8 from 1822; and 3 from 1823.

A Life in the Port Trade

The Port Lover’s Library edition was planned in an edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. Only 88 copies were completed due to both printers and bindery waste, of which only 78 copies for sale. The copies are signed in full by James Symington. The Port Lover’s Library edition is initialed by Isaac Oelgart as well.
A small edition was privately printed for The Symington Family for their private distribution and are not for sale. That work carries their imprint.
The book was cast and set in monotype Baskerville by David Wolfe and Ivy Derderian of David Wolfe Editions, as I eschew computer typesetting and polymer plates for letterpress printing, which in my mind is akin to drinking wine out of a plastic bag.
John Baskerville, 1706-1775, was born in Wolver-ley, England. He was a successful business man involved in japanning and papier-mâché business, but is best known as a typographer and Birmingham printer. He designed the typeface that is known “Baskerville” in 1757. Baskerville printed books for Cambridge University, et al. In lieu of the fact Baskerville was an atheist, his opus, the splendid 1763 folio bible, is one of finest English language bibles of the 18th century. His work influenced Ben Franklin who brought Baskerville’s type to the newly formed United States which was used on federal government publications and Franklin’s books. Baskerville as a typeface fell out of favor but was redrawn and revived by Bruce Rogers in 1917. After printing A Life.., the type was destroyed save for hand full of type which I kept as a memento.
The paper was imported from Germany from the Hahnemühle Paper Company which was originally founded in 1584. Hahnemühle Biblio is a 150g sheet, wove finish, with two watermarks per sheet. It is a 31 x 42 inch mould made sheet, made one sheet at time and as such has natural deckles on its edges. The sheet was cut into quarters, for an approximate 15 ½ X 21 press sheet now with two deckle edges. It was printed 4-up and 4to folded for an approximate 7 ¼ x 10 ½ page size. – a very pleasant proportion, with ample margins. The endpapers are Hahnemühle Bugra 150g laid finish. Both sheets are neutral ph.
The book was hand printed on a mechanical Vandercook cylindrical proofing press, one press sheet and one color at a time. The work was printed in two colors.
The book was smythe sewn and case bound in blue cloth over .120 neutral ph boards, stamp in gilt from copper dies by Acme Bookbinding – America’s oldest contentiously operating bindery, which was established in 1820.
A Life... is illustrated with 13 hand tipped illustrations from old and new photographs. The illustrations were printed offset and digitally on Mohawk neutral ph paper and tipped in by hand using a neutral ph adhesive.
Designed by Isaac Oelgart, the PLL edition produced by John J Hayes 3rd.
The Symington edition produced by The Symington Family Estates: A Life In The Port Trade began in Graham’s Lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia , Portugal in 2003. The Symington’s were sponsoring a dinner for the Institute do Vinho do Porto press tour, of which I was part of. I sat next to James and in due course asked him if he would be interested in writing a Portonian Series essay for the Port Lover’s Library. He agreed, and over the next year the scope and format changed several times and grew into the present volume. The Symington’s and their Symington Family Estates are the quintessential Port shippers and James gives an excellent account of his life in the Port trade. They have the largest share of the Port trade business, with brands such as Graham’s, Dow’s, Warre’s, Quinta do Vesuvio, Smith Woodhouse, Newman’s, Cockburn’s as well as Madeira’s and still wines. They are one of the three remaining members of the British Factory House in Oporto and members of the most prestigious Primum Familiae Vini. James is retired and his son Rupert now takes his spot along with his cousins in the Symington’s operation.
